Airport operator Abu Dhabi Airports has conducted a full-scale operational trial of the Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Conducted as part of the continuing development of the Terminal Complex and the on-going Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, the test assessed the capacity and facilities of the new terminal.

More than 800 volunteers and two Etihad Aviation Group airplanes participated in simulating the operation on 30 June, reported news agency WAM.

The operational readiness trial included loading catering supplies, refuelling the aircraft, and conducting checks ahead of take-off.

Airport staff and strategic stakeholders evaluated immigration, security, hand-baggage handling, baggage reclaim, and customs processes.

The new facility features Midfield Airside Road Tunnel (MART), which connects the Midfield Terminal Building with the Southside terminals, T1 and T3.

Once operational, the new terminal building will be capable of handling tens of millions of passengers per annum.

The terminal covers an area of 742,000m² and also features a baggage handling system that processes approximately half a million bags per day.

Abu Dhabi Airports CEO Bryan Thompson told the news agency: “Trials are an important step in the delivery of the MTC project, as we safely and securely assess the terminal’s operational capacities and processes.

“Through conducting trials of this scale and fully assessing the results therein, we will be able to make sure that passengers enjoy an efficient and smooth journey through the MTC from the very first day of operation.”
