GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) has awarded contracts for an airport expansion to India-based construction firm L&T Construction and Philippines-based Megawide Corporation.

A subsidiary of GMR Infra, GHIAL manages the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. It is planning to expand the terminal building and support airside infrastructure.

This expansion will help manage 34 million passengers a year, an increase of 22 million from the existing capacity.

Through international competitive bidding round, based on a lowest-bidder (L1) basis, GHIAL has issued a letter of award for the expansion to Larsen & Toubro and Megawide Construction for Rs30.28bn ($433.03m) and Rs9.8bn ($140.15m), respectively.

“The scope of the work includes execution and implementation of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for expansion of the terminal building.”

L&T stated: “The scope of the work includes execution and implementation of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for expansion of the terminal building and airside infrastructure works at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, Telangana.”

The expansion works are scheduled to be complete in 42 months.

Established around ten years ago, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was constructed by L&T.

GHIAL operates as a joint venture (JV), which is 63% owned by GMR Group, 13% by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), 13% by the Government of Telangana and 11% by Malaysia Airports Holdings.

The airport is capable of handling 150,000t of cargo per annum in Phase I. The project has the flexibility to increase its capacity to accommodate more than 40 million passengers per annum and is being developed in a phased manner.
