Manchester Airport in the UK is set to introduce new drop-off charges to deal with congestion in its premises.

Starting 10 July, people driving friends or family to the airport will be charged a £3 fee for five minutes or £4 for ten minutes to drop off directly outside terminals.

The airport believes that the new charge will ease increasing congestion level on the airport campus by reducing the number of cars entering the busiest areas of the site.

Manchester Airport has created a dedicated drop-off site for all three terminals and stations. From there, travellers can board a free shuttle service to their terminal of choice.

The airport said that there will be no change to arrangements for picking people up. Those collecting passengers will have to pay £4 for up to 30 minutes in the airport’s multi-storey car parks.

“Manchester Airport has seen a significant increase in passenger volumes in the past five years and is heavily investing in further growth and improvements.”

Manchester Airport chief operating officer Tricia Williams said: “Manchester Airport has seen a significant increase in passenger volumes in the past five years and is heavily investing in further growth and improvements to the customer experience, most notably through our £1bn transformation programme.

“We are committed to ensuring people can still be dropped off for free at the airport, which is why we have invested in the creation of a dedicated drop-off site and free shuttle service.

“The location of the site has been carefully chosen due to its proximity to all terminals and the motorway network.”

Vehicles re-circulating around the campus have been a major cause of congestion.

To address this, vehicles that do want to pay the drop-off charge will not be allowed to re-circulate and if found violating the vehicles will face a £25 penalty.

Blue badge holders are allowed to drop off outside of the terminals without paying any charges. Additionally, private hire taxi drivers will be offered a discount of up to 40%.

Manchester Airport has a good environmental record, becoming the first UK airport to attain carbon neutral status last year.
