Qatar’s Hamad International Airport reveals phase B expansion plan

Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) unveiled its phase B expansion plan at Cityscape Qatar in Doha.

According to the plan, the expansion project will introduce a 10,000m² indoor tropical garden to a central concourse at the airport.

It will also feature a 268m² water feature, which the airport said would be the project’s focal point.

HIA noted that its expansion will be carried out in two phases, A and B.


Cox Architecture and ZHA to design Sydney’s new airport terminal

Western Sydney Airport in Australia selected Cox Architecture and Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) to design its new terminal building.

The airport began searching for a design team in January this year and had shortlisted five teams by June.

Second World War-era aircraft crashes at Bradley Airport, Connecticut

A Second World War-era bomber aircraft crashed while attempting to make an emergency landing at Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Connecticut in the US.

Bradley International Airport tweeted: “We can confirm that there was an accident involving a Collings Foundation World War II aircraft this morning at Bradley Airport. We have an active fire and rescue operation underway. The airport is closed. We will issue further updates as information becomes available.”

The aircraft, which was carrying a total of 13 people, reported a problem five minutes into the flight.


Toronto Pearson Airport to test AI-powered weapon detection technology

Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) agreed to test Liberty Defense’s weapon detection technology HEXWAVE at Toronto Pearson Airport.

Toronto Pearson International Airport is the first airport to test HEXWAVE, which is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

HEXWAVE employs 3D radar imaging to detect and identify weapons. It can help security personnel in identifying threats at the property perimeter without disturbing passenger flow.


Atos secures deal with Spanish airport operator AENA

French IT company Atos received a contract worth €12m to manage and overhaul core applications at 46 airports operated by Spanish airport operator AENA.

The contract is initially valid for three years, with the option to extend it for a further two years available.

AENA uses different applications for the management of its airports, passengers and other airline-related activities.


ANA starts trial of self-driving wheelchair at Tokyo-Narita Airport

All Nippon Airways (ANA) expanded the trials for self-driving wheelchairs at Tokyo-Narita International Airport in Japan.

The wheelchairs aim to assist passengers in navigating the airport.

The testing, which began on 9 October, will run until 28 November. Further plans include full implementation after the next year.


Christchurch International Airport trials humanoid robots

Christchurch International Airport in New Zealand started testing humanoid robots at its terminal as part of an initiative to study emerging disruptive technologies.

Other technologies that the airport is testing under this initiative include autonomous smart shuttle and virtual reality training for its fire service.

Christchurch Airport chief executive Malcolm Johns said that a total of three Pepper robots have been tested at the airport by staff. Of them, one will now become operational at the terminal.


AAI to monetise 759 acres of land near eight major Indian airports

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is reportedly planning to monetise 759 acres of land near eight major Indian airports.

The move is aimed at enabling private firms to create warehouses, hotels or restaurants on the land.

Funds generated through the land monetisation will be used to develop airport infrastructure, an AAI senior executive revealed.

Wellington International Airport in New Zealand revealed its 2040 masterplan detailing plans to accommodate traffic growth over the next two decades.

The proposed plan includes terminal expansion, runway and taxiway system enhancement and the construction of freight facilities, additional parking stands and a modern fire station.

It also includes the introduction of quick transport from Wellington city centre.


GVK to divest 79.1% stake in airport venture for $1.07bn

India-based GVK Power & Infrastructure reached an agreement to divest a 79.1% stake in its airport business to raise Rs76.14bn ($1.07bn).

The company will use the funds to retire debt obligations and increase its 50.5% stake in Mumbai International Airport (MIAL).

The company will divest its stake in Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) and National Investment & Infrastructure Fund (NIIF).
