European researchers develop EU-funded system to reduce energy costs in airports

European researchers developed a new software and sensor system to lower carbon emissions and energy costs in airports by 20%.

The development was backed by funding from the European Commission, under the EU Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development.

The new system, known as CASCADE, will allow Italian airports to lower energy consumption by 6,000MW/h, which is equivalent to 42,000t of CO² a year.

New study reveals increasing public support for airport expansion in UK

A recent survey revealed that the UK Government had increased public support for airport expansion.

According the study, people who live near Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, London City and Stansted Airports were more likely to be in favour of expansion at their local facility than they were in 2010.

The survey was in line with a poll from market research company Populus, which showed that Heathrow residents were 25% more likely to vote for a councillor if they supported expansion at the airport.

SITA to deploy AIRCOM Server Flight Tracker in India

Air transport IT provider SITA planned to deploy its AIRCOM Server Flight Tracker in India for efficient aircraft tracking.

The move came after an announcement by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation to mandate aircraft tracking on a real-time basis.

SITA’s AIRCOM Server Flight Tracker solution combines SITA’s airline dispatcher centre system and airline operations centre system server with its Future Air Navigation System ground application, which is available to air navigation service providers.

Orlando Airport to invest $155.8m in automated people mover

Orlando International Airport in the US announced plans to invest a total of $155.8m in the construction of a new automated people mover (APM).

The move forms a part of the airport’s $1bn expansion plan to provide efficient services for its passengers.

Orlando Airport awarded contracts for the design, construction and maintenance of the proposed APM, which will replace the two existing shuttle systems.

Exelis installs deicing management technology at PHL

Exelis deployed its new deicing management solution, Symphony DeiceVue, at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in the US.

Prior to the deployment of the new technology, tasks in the deicing process were manually carried out to improve the coordination, efficiency and reporting accuracy of deicing operations.

In order to coordinate deicing operations between the airport, the airlines, the deice company (Swissport) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the company provided advanced automation through a contract with Swissport International.

Gama Aviation opens business jet terminal at Sharjah Airport

UK-based air charter company Gama Aviation opened its own business jet terminal at the UAE’s Sharjah International Airport.

The new $15m executive terminal will serve Sharjah, Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

It is part of the company’s plan to attract business passengers who need to get to the Northern Emirates quickly.

Envirotainer gets green light from FAA for RKN e1 container

Envirotainer announced that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved its RKN e1 air cargo container.

The company had already secured approvals from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and other country specific regulatory bodies.

With the latest approval, airlines can now conduct their own engineering assessment for the RKN e1 container on-board their aircraft.

Work begins on new terminal at New Zealand’s Auckland Airport

Work started on Phase I of the new combined domestic and international terminal at Auckland Airport in New Zealand.

The move forms a part of the airport’s 30-year vision that was announced in March.

As part of the project, a total of $8.4m will be invested in the extension of the international baggage hall, which will be increased by approximately 2,500m².
