Construction works start on Western Sydney Airport

Construction works started on Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek in Australia with early earthworks.

The Australian Government is investing up to A$5.3bn ($3.84bn) in equity to deliver the airport.

Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: “This airport will remove the handbrake from the Western Sydney economy.


Heathrow invests in restoration of UK peatlands for carbon neutrality

London Heathrow Airport in collaboration with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) invested in the restoration of UK peatlands to offset carbon emissions.

The initiative is part of Heathrow’s strategy to make the airport carbon neutral by 2020, and eventually for its infrastructure to be zero carbon by 2050.

Little Woolden Moss, west of Manchester, will be Heathrow’s first restoration priority that has been subject to commercial peat extraction for more than 15 years.

Delta partners with CBP and TSA to launch first US biometric terminal

American passenger carrier Delta Air Lines is set to introduce the first US biometric terminal at Maynard H Jackson International Terminal (Terminal F) in Atlanta.

Delta teamed up with the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for the rollout of the biometric terminal.

Customers departing to an international destination have the option of using facial recognition technology from check-in to the gate at the airport starting late this year.


Fraport Greece to expand Thessaloniki Airport in Greece

Fraport Greece, a subsidiary of German airport operator Fraport, announced plans to expand Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) in Greece.

In addition to improving comfort, safety and functionality at the airport, the operator will enhance the airport’s image and enable it to serve a growing number of passengers, which is expected to increase 48% by 2026.

Fraport Greece said that the company will invest approximately €100m in creating a ‘new era’ at Greece’s second largest city.


San Francisco Airport and ADB partner for aircraft docking management

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the US partnered with ADB Safegate for automated aircraft docking and integrated apron management solutions to improve the visibility of aircraft operations and optimise the use of existing gates.

As part of the airport’s redevelopment project at Terminal 1, ADB Safegate will deploy Safedock T1 Advanced Visual Docking Guidance Systems (A-VDGS) and SafeControl Apron Management (SAM) integration software.

The Safedock systems will support safe and precise automated parking of aircraft at the gate.


Study finds aviation industry should focus on carbon emission cuts

Research commissioned by the UK’s air traffic services provider NATS revealed that cutting carbon emissions from aircraft should be the top priority for the aviation industry.

As part of the research, dubbed the Aviation Index, Ipsos MORI polled nearly 1,000 participants.

More than half (52%) of respondents said that cutting emissions from flying should be the main objective of any reworking of the UK’s airspace.


Rohde & Schwarz and COCESNA agree ATC modernisation in Central America

Air traffic control (ATC) communications provider Rohde & Schwarz signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Central American aviation safety service provider COCESNA to equip airports with its communications technology.

COCESNA manages the airspace of Belize, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The airspace, which borders on Mexico in the west and Panama in the east, also includes major areas over the Caribbean Sea and the South Pacific Ocean.


Airways New Zealand and MITRE partner to support Asia Pacific aviation

Airways New Zealand and the MITRE Corporation signed a MoU for improving safety, capacity, and efficiency in the aviation sector across the Asia Pacific region.

Under the MoU, both partners will collaborate in aviation research and development, and address aviation challenges in the region.

Partnering with the aviation community, the US-based not-for-profit research and development organisation MITRE seeks to advance the safety, security, and efficiency of aviation in the US and across the globe.


Watson Batty Architects to design new facilities for LBA extension

British design firm Watson Batty Architects won a contract to design the new arrivals extension, departure pier and internal remodelling at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) in the UK.

The selection comes after an ongoing brief for Watson Batty to support extension works planned as part of the airport’s ‘Route to 2030’ Strategic Development Plan.

Recently, LBA revealed plans for the £12.5m ($16.5m) three-storey extension to its terminal building, which will include a transformed international arrivals process with immigration, baggage reclaims and customs.


WM Schlosser wins Concourse A extension contract at Richmond Airport

WM Schlosser Company secured a contract from the Capital Region Airport Commission for the extension of Concourse A at Richmond International Airport (RIC) in the US.

The company’s bid of $28.488m was within 2% of the cost estimate for the project.

As part of the project, six additional gates will be installed at Concourse A to bring the airport’s total gate count to 28. The six-gate expansion of Concourse A is set to provide space for future airline growth.
