AXA Power Introduces New Ground Power Unit to Suit the New All-Electric Aircraft
The introduction of all-electric aircraft like the B787, A350 and A380 presents a challenge to the GSE industry. First to respond to the challenging power requirements of these aircraft has been AXA Power, by launching the AXA 2300 compact GPU, an environment-friendly new series of 400Hz ground power units.
The new unit has been specially designed to meet the requirements of both power factor 0.8 aircraft and of new power factor 1 aircraft. It has been thoroughly tested at both AXA Power’s factory and through continuous field tests at different international airports, well in advance of its official launch, which will be at the Inter Airport Show in Munich, in October 2007.
PLUG-AND-PLAY SYSTEM FOR OPTIMUM AIRCRAFT PLUG VOLTAGE QUALITY
The AXA 2300 is provided with a plug-and-play facility – a unique and revolutionary way of compensating for voltage drop in distribution cables. It surpasses traditional compensation systems, where the voltage is regulated as a function of the average output current or the system relies on a voltage feedback from the plug.
The AXA plug-and-play system automatically identifies all relevant cable parameters to determine the voltage drop and controls each phase individually as a function of any load characteristic. The result is an extremely high voltage quality at the plug, both for traditional power factor 0.8 aircraft and the new power factor 1 aircraft.
When the aircraft plug is connected to the AXA auto-calibration plug, the plug-and-play system analyses 36 different cable parameters, calculates the voltage drop in the cables and automatically sets up the voltage compensation. The result is the best achievable voltage quality at the aircraft plug, i.e. 115V at all three phases – and largely within the ± 3V safety margin allowed by modern aircraft. The whole compensation process takes only about 10ms.
AXA POWER EXPECTS ACCELERATED GROWTH FOR 2008
AXA Power is the leading manufacturer of 400Hz solid-state ground power units, with more than 6,000 units in operation at major airports around the world. General sales manager Poul Elvstrøm stated that "during the current year, AXA Power has sold around 800 ground power units, and with the introduction of the AXA 2300 compact GPU series along with the success of the AXA power coil, we expect an increased growth in sales for the year to come. Europe is our primary market, but we also see a strong demand from the Middle and Far East."
