Quintiq, a global leader in supply chain planning and optimisation, has announced that Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) has chosen Quintiq for employee planning.

ATNS is responsible for South Africa’s air traffic control (ATC), overseeing approximately 10% of the world’s airspace. As the company grew, it required a workforce planning platform to build efficient rosters for 600 controllers, as well as plan daily tasks according to the variable demands of flight traffic.

Quintiq was selected based on its ability to meet the specific requirements of ATC and its track record in the air navigation service provider (ANSP) industry. ATNS will use Quintiq to efficiently incorporate all scheduling constraints in one integrated solution, which is critical to the utilisation, recruiting and training of air traffic controllers. It is also essential to have a planning system that follows prescribed rules agreed by unions and set by aviation regulatory bodies such as the South African Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the safe provision of the service.

"We were very impressed by Quintiq and its ability to deliver a solution for our specific needs," said Thabani Mthiyane, CEO at ATNS.

"ATC requires all systems to be fully safety compliant with its regulations and Quintiq allows us to provide a safe and reliable service to our customers. It was clear from speaking to references that they are able to help us achieve this as well as improve our cost effective service delivery."

ATNS also trains new controllers each year for itself and other ANSPs in the region. The Quintiq planning system will be extended to plan the activities related to the training and testing of student controllers.

"Our contract with ATNS is an important step in developing our market presence in Africa," said Arjen Heeres, COO at Quintiq.

"The selection process was by open tender and Quintiq established itself as the superior solution. Quintiq is already used by ANSPs to help control more than half the world’s airspace and we are eager for ATNS to benefit from the savings, improved safety and performance improvements enjoyed by our other customers."
