Global travel lifestyle brand TUMI has launched TUMI Global Locator, a wireless tracking device that allows travellers to track their luggage and travel bags during journeys.

The company has launched the device in collaboration with AT&T, a provider of internet of things (IoT) solutions.

TUMI’s Global Locator makes use of global positioning system (GPS), global system for mobile (GSM), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology to track the location of luggage in which it has been placed.

It features a compact body measuring 4.33in x 2.55in x 0.83in and weighing 150g.

This device provides real-time data through a free mobile application available for both Android and iOS devices.

Hardware for the device was developed by LugTrack, a New Jersey-based technology company.

"By providing connectivity for the TUMI Global Locator, AT&T lets travellers around the world remain tapped into a more connected life."

Last year, more than 21.6 million bags were mishandled by airports worldwide, with 5.7 bags lost per 1,000 passengers.

Although airports and airlines are investing in technology to track luggage under their respective jurisdictions, the TUMI Global Locator enables customers to track luggage from the beginning of their journey.

TUMI North America general manager Rob Cooper said: “We understand that one of the most stressful parts of any journey is the risk of losing your luggage, be that temporarily or permanently.

“The goal of the TUMI Global Locator is to make this a concern of the past, giving our customers peace of mind and ensuring a more enjoyable travel experience. TUMI’s Global Locator embodies all this with the focus on safeguarding our customers’ belongings.”

AT&T internet of things solutions vice-president of business development Joe Mosele said: “As the internet of things (IoT) grows, consumers and businesses have a desire to remain connected in a bigger way than ever before, regardless of whether they are at home or on the go.

“By providing connectivity for the TUMI Global Locator, AT&T lets travellers around the world remain tapped into a more connected life.”

Using accelerometer sensor technology, the Global Locator operates with four alternative modes, including Travel Mode, Sleep Mode, Hotel Mode and Proximity.

Travel Mode tracks a bag’s location every 20-30 minutes and records where it has been during a journey.

The device enters Sleep Mode during flights, but can be activated by passengers at any time.

Hotel Mode enables users to ensure their bag stays in one location by recognising the designated location as its ‘Home Base’, and alerting the user if it is moved.

In Proximity Mode, the device uses Bluetooth technology to allow users to tether bags containing the TUMI Global Locator to a connected device, such as a mobile phone.
