The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will buy 30 document-scanning systems, called Credential Authentication Technology - Boarding Pass Scanning Systems (CAT-BPSS), to test checkpoints at selected airports in early 2012.
CAT-BPSS, which will replace the current procedure used by security officers, has the ability to identify altered or fraudulent passenger identification credentials and boarding passes.
The machines, which will cost $3.2m, will be incorporated into TSA's risk-based pilot at four airports in the near future.
The new technology will automatically verify passenger identification documents and boarding passes to help facilitate risk-based security and make the process more effective and efficient.
