The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the US has confirmed plans to upgrade Taxiway Sierra (Taxiway S) over a nine-day project next month.

After the completion of the project, the revamped taxiway will offer full-length departures from Runway 10R, help reduce departure delays during parallel Runway 10L operations, and enable the airport to meet new federal taxiway design criteria.

During the construction, which is slated to take place from 11 October to 19 October, all four runways at the airport will remain operational.

Located nearest to the construction area, Runway 28L will be shortened to a length of 9,000ft during the project period and will only be used for arriving flights to prevent aircraft from taking off over the construction site.

Under normal runway configurations, SFO does not expect the project to delay the arrival time of inbound flights, though departing international and long-haul aircraft can take slightly longer taxi times as Runway 28L will be closed for take-offs.

SFO has designed the taxiway enhancement project plan in collaboration with airlines and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The operation of the shortened Runway 28L was evaluated through an FAA Safety Risk Management (SRM) panel.

A similar construction project was last carried out by the airport in 2012, when the runways were temporarily shortened.
