The UK’s London City Airport has unveiled artist impressions of a planned £400m development programme.

The city airport development programme (CADP), which is expected to be completed in 2021, is aimed at developing seven new aircraft stands, a parallel taxiway to maximise runway capacity, and a terminal extension to cater to growing number of passengers.

The improvements to the airport are aimed at allowing two million more passengers annually by 2025.

In addition, the investment is expected to ultimately lead to the addition of 30,000 more flights per year, creating an excess of 2,000 jobs.

Once the works are completed, the airport will contribute an additional £750m per annum to the UK economy.

London City Airport CEO Declan Collier said: “Over the past 30 years, London City Airport has become an intrinsic part of London’s transport system; growing responsibly to a record-breaking 4.6 million annual passengers in 2016, creating local employment, and connecting business and leisure travellers with the UK, Europe and beyond.

“The City Airport Development Programme presents the opportunity to create an airport of the future, which will help meet demand in the London market, and increase connectivity.”

This year marks 30 years of operations for the airport, where commercial flights started operating in 1987.

The airport is also constructing a digital air traffic control tower, which is set to become operational in 2019.

With enabling works currently under way, construction is expected to commence early next year.

The seven updated CGIs by architects Pascall + Watson present a view of how the airport will look, post-development works.

The exterior views of the airport, as can be seen in the impressions, include the passenger terminal, whose size will be increased by around 40,000m².
