FAA deploys Data Comm technology at five airports in New York, US


The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has implemented the new NextGen technology, Data Comm, at five airports in New York, US.

The airports include LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty, Teterboro and Westchester County.

Data Comm is expected to enhance safety and reduce delays by improving the way air traffic controllers and pilots communicate with each other.

The technology supplements radio voice communication, allowing controllers and pilots to easily transmit important data on clearances, revised flight plans and advisories.

FAA NextGen deputy assistant administrator Pamela Whitley said: “Data Comm is helping to keep flights departing on time throughout the New York area.

“This significantly improves flight operations throughout the nation’s airspace, since one third of all flights in this country each day fly to, from or through New York airspace.”

The enhanced efficiency offered by the new solution can save an average of 13 minutes per flight in New York during heavy traffic congestion times, which are typically caused by adverse weather conditions.

Pilots flying aircraft that are fitted with Data Comm receive revised flight plans through digital messages from air traffic controllers.

The flight crew then review the new clearances and push a button to accept the updated instructions.

Using Data Comm, aircraft can keep their place in take-off queues or even be taken out of line and sent ahead, ensuring they remain on schedule.

Last year, the Data Comm technology helped enhance the flying experience for 10.6 million passengers on 70,000 flights departing from New York.
