Aecom secures Abu Dhabi Airport construction management contract
Aecom Technology has received a $85m contract to provide construction management services for the new Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) at Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA) in UAE.
Under the five-year contract Aecom will be involved in the construction of the 7.5-million-square-foot Midfield Terminal and provide associated airside and landside infrastructure.
Aecom will carry out the work in association with Hill International, which is acting as the sub-consultant for the project.
The $2.9bn MTC construction contract has been awarded to Turkey's TAV Insaat, Dubai's Arabtec and Athens-based Consolidated Contractors and the work on the project is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2012 in two phases.
The first phase involves the construction of the terminal over the subsequent four years, while the second includes an operational readiness assessment (ORA), for testing all features of the terminal to ensure operational and efficiency readiness.
Work on the project also involves development of the area adjacent the MTB for supporting its operation, which will feature aircraft parking stands, terminal roadways, roads connecting to the Abu Dhabi / Dubai highway and utility facilities.
Scheduled to open in 2017, the passenger facilities at the Midfield Terminal will also include over 296,000ft² of airline hospitality lounges, a transit hotel, as well as a heritage and culture museum.
With an annual passenger handling capacity of more than 30 million, the new terminal also includes piers, which can handle up to 65 aircraft and check-in, which includes 165 counters, in addition to 48 self-service kiosks.
Baggage systems, which will be equipped in the terminal, can process 19,000 bags per hour on 22km of conveying lines and ten reclaim carousels.
