Denver International Airport (DIA) in the US will develop a 4.4MW solar system to power its daily operations, as part of its sustainability initiative.
Constellation Energy will finance, own and operate the solar system, while DIA will purchase the electricity produced by the system from Constellation over a 20-year period.
Yingli Green Energy will supply the photovoltaic panels for the project, while Intermountain Electric will begin construction of the system in 2010, with completion expected by early 2011.
The system will use 19,000 solar photovoltaic panels to supply 7,000MWh of electricity to DIA each year.
Generating the same amount of electricity by using non-renewable sources would reportedly result in the release of 5,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the environment.
