Manchester Airport to Double Flight Movement

9 March 2010

The UK Government has predicted that Manchester Airport will double the number of flights it handles in the next 40 years and become as busy as Heathrow Airport.

Manchester Airport, located in north-west England, will handle 449,000 takeoffs and landings by 2050 compared to 213,000 in 2005, according to Manchester Evening News.

The airport will be handling a flight take-off or landing on average every 70 seconds.

The Department for Transport published the forecast in a report to the Committee on Climate Change as part of its efforts to determine carbon dioxide emissions in Britain.

According to the forecast, Manchester will be the fastest growing of the four biggest airports in Britain and will overtake Gatwick to become the second busiest.
