Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the US held a groundbreaking ceremony this week for the $1.5bn Tom Bradley international terminal modernisation project.
The project is expected to be completed in 2012 and will allow the terminal to handle an additional number of Airbus A380 super-jumbo jet flights.
Construction work includes the stretching of flat-seam stainless-steel over column-free structures to create a cohesive theme that will complement the arches of the LAX theme building.
The project will also offer new lounge space, enlarged federal inspection / customs and border protection facilities, and other passenger amenities.
The new Bradley terminal will feature 15 new boarding gates and enlarged passenger seating / holdroom areas.
The project is funded by the airport's operating revenues, fees from airlines, passenger facility charges and airport revenue bond proceeds.
