British Firm Developing New Body Scanner

18 January 2010

A British firm is developing a new body scanner that will be capable of identifying a wide range of concealed explosives without producing an image of passengers.

TeraView's scanners use terahertz light to detect different types of plastic explosives through a variety of clothing or shoes.

The technology is being developed in light of the failed Christmas Day terrorist attack by a Nigerian passenger on a US-bound flight from Amsterdam.

The non-invasive scanners can reportedly identify PETN, the explosive which the bomber recently successfully carried onto an aircraft undetected.

The new scanners also reportedly eliminate radiation fears surrounding both millimeter-wave and X-ray technologies.

TeraView is seeking additional funding to incorporate the technology into a unit for airports, which it estimates will take a year.

An October study, however, suggested that the terahertz radiation could damage DNA despite its non-ionising properties.
