US Airports Plan Red Lights for Runways in Safety Bid

15 July 2008

US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced plans to put red lights on runways at the country's busiest airports, including Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

The move is part of efforts to prevent plane collisions, the lights enabling pilots to see runway problems faster than air-traffic controllers can alert them.

Speaking to Associated Press (AP), a captain for Chicago-based United Airlines Rory Kay said the lights are a “step forward” for safety.

The FAA plans to install the lights in runway pavement at 19 airports nationwide.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said it hopes to have the lights installed on all runways by 2015, writes the Chicago Tribune.
