Chile's Punta Arenas Airport has announced plans to open a terminal dedicated to providing a hub for air transport between Antarctica and the rest of the world.
The new facility will be situated in one of its refurbished terminals and will be renamed 'El Terminal Aero Antartico'.
British Antarctic Survey says that it will use the new airport to reach its base and research centres on Antarctica.
Tenders for the work are going out in September for the project which is expected to cost $9m.
Besides refurbishing the old terminal, the runway will be lengthened, there will be a new tower and better car-parking facilities.
