China has announced plans to build a new airport, in Guangdong Province.
According to local government authorities, Shaoshan Airport, which will have both civil and military functions, will be in operation by 2010.
The new airport will use facilities at the unused military airbase at Guitou Town in Ruyuan County, to the north of the city, and will be jointly run by China Southern Airlines Group and Guangdong Airport Management Corp.
The US$40.5m airport will initially serve up to 188,000 passengers a year and will be able to accept Boeing 737-300 aircraft.
