The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has awarded Smiths Detection follow-on contracts worth US$25.2m for additional Advanced Threat Identification X-Ray (aTiX) systems.
The aTiX system captures multiple views of carry-on bags in a single sweep in the same throughput time as existing technology.
It also includes powerful software algorithms that help the operator detect potentially harmful items.
This software has the potential to be upgraded as new threats emerge, Smiths says.
The TSA initially placed a US$21m order in October last year.
The system will be installed across the US and has already completed checkpoint installations at Albuquerque and Denver International airports.
The system is already widely used in the UK.
