Italy's Florence Airport has selected two architectural firms to design the upgrade to its main terminal.
The UK's Pascall+Watson and Italy's Ausglobe Formula will develop a plan that allows for future expansion of the terminal, for the building to be contemporary and make specific references to local character.
Pascall+Watson Director Ian Douglas says technological solutions connected to energy saving and reduced environmental impact have been included in the design.
"Large areas of the roof have been designed as a green roof and photovoltaics [solar technology] will assist with energy provision," he says.
"We will use copper cladding panels, which define different areas of the terminal and makes historical reference to the early use of copper in the city of Florence."
A total of 19 companies worldwide participated in the initial stages of the competition.
