Jomo Kenyatta Airport Expansion Delayed

06 February 2008 14:19

The second phase of expansion at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya has been put on hold while financial details are confirmed.

The World Bank agreed to finance ten percent of the US$339.2m needed, but is reconsidering its position after tender objections delayed completion of the first phase by six months.

The contract for phase one, covering taxiway and apron construction, civil works for the new terminal building, extension of the fuel hydrant system and fencing was awarded to Chinese construction company China Wuyi Ltd in 2006.

Losing bidders H Young and Company East Africa challenged the Kenya Airports Authority’s decision, leading to delays.

Phase two, which was due to begin in July last year, will satisfy the urgent need for the expansion and upgrading of the airport buildings.

Tenders for the project will be requested once the World Bank gives its approval.
