US likely to shift air traffic control to a nonprofit commercial entity

The US government is reportedly considering a new proposal that might soon see the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forego its power of operating the US air traffic control (ATC).

If implemented, the ATC will experience an overhaul to make it resemble its Canadian counterpart, called NAV Canada, Reuters reported.

US airline trade group Airlines for America head Nick Calio said the changes could be implemented soon as the Canadian system is considered to be one of the best-operated systems.

UK’s Heathrow Airport have shut down its 47-year-old Terminal 1 after shifting majority of airlines to the newer terminals that offer better facilities.

Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1968, the terminal had a capacity of handling approximately nine million passengers at full capacity.

In the last few weeks, the terminal saw only 17 flights and handled approximately 1,700 passengers per day as its use was slowly being phased out.

US airports to manage airspace with Nasa’s new tool

The US air traffic controllers (ATCs) might soon manage the country’s airspace with a new software tool developed by Nasa.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is in the process of deploying the Terminal Sequencing and Spacing (TSAS) software at airports to enable pilots to use their flight deck automation for reducing fuel consumption and noise.

The tool will allow more flights to merge together at a point for final approach and landing clearance.

 

Abu Dhabi Airports to build a new airport in Seychelles

UAE-based airport operator Abu Dhabi Airports (ADAC) is reportedly in talks with authorities in the Seychelles for the construction of a new airport in the country.

An undisclosed ADAC spokesperson confirmed to Gulf News that the company was negotiating the construction of an airport in Victoria, the capital of Seychelles.

A spokesperson said: "We believe that such a venture will further strengthen the ties between the Government of Abu Dhabi and the Republic of Seychelles."

Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean off eastern Africa.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to invest $430m in terminal modernisation

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has issued request-for-proposals (RFP) to upgrade its domestic passenger terminal and concourses.

The $430m project is aimed at lending the airport a fresh look, with a modernised domestic terminal, and concourses T, A, B, C and D.

Expected to be completed in three years, the project includes addition of steel, fabric and glass canopies at the fronts of the north and south terminal entrances to shield passengers from extreme weathers, reported the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

US aviation workers with potential terror links are no security threat: TSA

An internal review by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has revealed that the 73 aviation workers with alleged terror links did not pose any threat to the country’s transportation security.

A recent report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had found that TSA had failed to identify 73 aviation workers with potential terror ties as it did not have access to the complete terror watchlist.

The audit had also found that thousands of the necessary biographical records held by the TSA were either missing or incomplete and the agency has failed to detect terrorism-related codes associated with several of their names.

Bangladesh’s Shahjalal Airport to get $1.57bn makeover

The Bangladeshi Government is planning to spend an estimated BDT123bn ($1.57bn) on the construction of a new terminal and a second runway at the Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The expansion project is being planned to increase the airport’s efficiency and passenger handling capacity, reported The Dhaka Tribune

Currently, the airport operated and maintained by Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) has an annual passenger capacity of eight million.

According to undisclosed sources, the airport had completed preliminary procedures for the construction of the new terminal and will float an international tender for its construction in December.

Russia begins criminal inquiry against former Domodedovo executives over 2011 attacks

Russia has launched a criminal inquiry against former executives of Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport over loose security measures that allegedly facilitated the January 2011 terror attack at the airport.

Export Management Company head and director of the airport Svetlana Trishina, Domodedovo Airport aviation security director Andrey Danilov, and airport facilities director Vyacheslav Nekrasov, along with other non-established owners of the airport have been listed as suspects in the case.

The deadly attack at the airport located around 40km (25 miles) south-east of the city centre, was carried out by a suicide bomber, Magomed Yevloyev, in the international arrival hall.

UK’s Manchester Airport gets £1bn for upgrade

UK’s Manchester Airport will invest £1bn in the modernisation of its facilities over the next ten years.

Located in north-west England, the airport has already been expanding its long-haul routes to provide passengers with an alternative to the Heathrow airport in the south.

Investments would be made in nearly 60 projects including the expansion of Terminal 2, improvements to Terminal 3 and preclearance facilities for passengers travelling to the US. The airport is likely to build new food and retail outlets.
