Remote Tower Operations a Step Closer to Realisation

LFV's work to develop the remote towers concept has now reached the half-way mark.

"This developmental work has been evolving since 2006 and the goal is to offer our clients services from the first quarter of 2014," says Niclas Gustavsson, business developer at LFV.

Today, local air traffic services are managed by the tower at the airport. LFV's operative concept, namely remote tower operations, is governed by the notion that numerous towers can be run from one location regardless of the distance to the airport.

This streamlining involves increased opportunities for small and medium-sized aircraft to lower their costs for air traffic services.

"Our customers, the airport managers, are seeking a more economical service which also offers flexibility. The remote tower concept fulfils these criteria perfectly by for instance, an airport having the versatility to choose routine tower services for daytime and remote towers for the night shift," explains Niclas Gustavsson.

The remote towers developmental work is being carried out at two locations in Sweden. At the control centre in Malmö, the concept is devised and tested, whilst in Sundsvall the equipment and office space is being prepared to remotely control the tower at Örnsköldsvik Airport from 2013. The LFV project remote tower is run within the framework for the EU programme SESAR whose goal is to streamline air traffic control services in Europe.
