L-3 Communications Receives Third Award from Transportation Security Administration

17 September 2002

NEW YORK, NY, September 17, 2002 - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Security and Detection Systems division has received an award of approximately $114 million from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the Department of Transportation that completes funding for 425 of its eXaminer 3DXTM 6000 explosive detection systems. This contract supplements previously announced agreements totaling approximately $241 million with the TSA for 180 eXaminer 3DX 6000 systems and component kits and long-lead funding for an additional 245 units, which are now fully funded, and brings the total contract value to approximately $355 million. Deliveries and deployments of these systems are underway.

The eXaminer 3DX 6000 is the only continuously scanning explosive detection system that is capable of completely scanning over 500 bags per hour. The system utilizes advanced multiple-slice computer tomography (CT) to image the entire bag and automatically analyze and detect a wide range of threats. Operators can easily and unambiguously view a bag in detail for quick resolution. A key advantage of the eXaminer 3DX 6000 is its ability to be installed either as a stand-alone system or fully integrated in-line with a conveyor system. L-3 formed a partnership with Analogic Corporation to apply its advanced design CT system to the development of the eXaminer 3DX 6000 and then worked closely with the Federal Aviation Administration to introduce it to the marketplace.
