L-3 Communications Receives Explosive Detection System Contract from AENA

NEW YORK, NY, November 20, 2002 - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL), announced today that its Security and Detection Systems division has received an order for thirteen of its VIS108 in-line, automated Level 1 explosive detection systems (EDS) from the airport authority of Spain, AENA (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea). The systems will be deployed to various airport locations within Spain as part of AENA's airport security upgrade to meet the ECAC requirements for 100% checked baggage screening. Deliveries and deployments of these systems are underway. This order, combined with others in Europe, Asia and North America, brings the total number of L-3 automated Level 1 EDS systems shipped to over 250 units this year.
Using proprietary dual-energy, x-ray technology, together with Security and Detection System's proven advanced algorithm capabilities, the VIS108 system is a high-speed, in-line automated detection system, specifically designed to meet the needs of multilevel checked baggage screening. The VIS108 system is capable of screening 1,800 bags per hour and has been accepted for use by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the U.K. Department for Transport (DfT). Its market-leading technology allows the VIS108 to provide the customer with the highest level of automated, Level 1 detection currently available.
