L-3 Communications Secures Largest International Baggage Screening Contract to Date

NEW YORK, NY, January 9, 2003 - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Security and Detection Systems division has been awarded the largest international hold baggage screening contract to date. The contract with Singapore's Changi Airport has a potential value of $45 million, and includes delivery, installation, integration, training, and maintenance requirements, as well as contract options for additional systems and an overall maintenance contract for all baggage screening systems.
The contract specifies delivery of products from L-3's complete line of automated, hold baggage screening systems for the inspection of check-in luggage, including VIS 108 and MVT integrated, Level 1 systems as well as certified, computed tomography eXaminer 3DX 6000® systems for Level 3 resolution. The agreement is the first of its kind to look to one provider for all certified systems. The vast majority of deliveries will begin early in 2003 and continue throughout the year.

Equipped with L-3's advanced option Threat Image Projection (TIP), Ethernet and MIS networking capabilities, the VIS 108 and MVT automated hold baggage-screening systems automatically screen checked baggage for explosives and sort suspicious baggage to Level 2 and 3 screening. The automated units are easily integrated into the existing baggage transport systems and screen a throughput of up to 1,800 bags per hour, ensuring quick and reliable explosive screening. Coupled with the Level 1 systems, L-3 offers Changi Airport the eXaminer-the most sophisticated Level 3 screening system available in today's market. The highly durable, easily integrated eXaminer has become the new standard in X-ray detection systems.
With a broad range of systems and technology, and an installed base of over 18,000 units, L-3 Security and Detection Systems business offers X-ray screening for several major security applications: aviation systems for checked and oversized baggage, cargo and air freight; port and border applications; and facility protection. Security and Detection Systems customer base includes major airlines and airports, a number of domestic agencies, such as the U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of State, and international authorities throughout Europe, Asia and South America.
