Honeywell Airport Systems

Honeywell Airport Systems - Airfield Lighting Equipment

Honeywell Airport Systems offers a broad spectrum of all necessary airfield lighting equipment, including constant current regulators, elevated and inset lights for all applications, precision approach path indicators, approach sequence flashing systems, traffic guidance signs, and installation materials. All Honeywell equipment complies with ICAO and FAA international standards.

Advanced surface movement guidance and control system

Honeywell Airport Systems has set the standard for improving airport ground operation. We have added our unique single lamp control and monitoring system (SLCM) to the highly sophisticated control and monitoring systems (CMS) to form the most modern advanced surface movement guidance and control system (A-SMGCS) available. Our A-SMGCS can interface to systems such as surface movement radar or airport weather-observation systems,

Control and monitoring A-SMGCS

Honeywell's advanced surface movement guidance and control system is designed to maintain the declared surface movement rate under all weather conditions within the aerodrome visibility operational level, while maintaining the required level of safety.

The current status of the control and monitoring (CAM) A-SMGCS is the prepared realization of the A-SMGCS Level V according to the definition of the ICAO, i.e. fully automated. It provides:

  • Surveillance (using surface movement radar and traffic sensor data)
  • Conflict prediction and / or detection
  • Conflict analysis and conflict resolution
  • Routing and planning

With Honeywell's CAM A-SMGCS three main objectives will be achieved. Firstly, integrated tower working positions will be provided. These present all relevant information for the tower controllers - such as digitized radar data, airfield ground lighting information, weather data, etc. - on one single display, in order to achieve a more convenient operability of the complex controller functions.

Improved air traffic control surveillance is also provided, through implementation of future-oriented surveillance systems and sensor fusion, displaying the actual traffic situation with a high degree of accuracy.

Finally, the systems provide fully automated functions for routing, guidance and control, and detection of potential conflicts, including proposals for their resolution.

Single lamp control and monitoring system

The key element in achieving these objectives is Honeywell's SLCM, which provides the following advantages:

  • Communication with addressable switch devices (ASD) via the airfield lighting series cable (no additional communication cable required)
  • Optimized communication for short response times (<1.5s)
  • Information about failed lamps with indication of lamp localization
  • Identification of adjacent lamp failures

Control and monitoring system

Based on experience from many applications, the Honeywell CMS is suited to fully handling all situations that occur during everyday airport operation. The controller working positions incorporate easily operated control units that have clear graphic displays. Operating aids are designed to simplify the control of taxiways and to ease the burden on the controllers.

The exceptional amount of effort placed into the design from the concept stage onwards ensures that all the high demands of airport safety-equipment standards are completely satisfied.

Visual docking guidance system (VDGS)

The VDGS produced by Honeywell ensures reliable recognition of aircraft independent of their position and orientation, and offers the following benefits:

  • Detection of the aircraft's position via high dynamic range semi-conductor camera and proven 3D model-based image processing (no active laser based system)
  • No rotating or swaying parts of the sensor (as necessary for laser sensors), thus no negative effect on MTBF
  • Recognition reliability irrespective of the aircraft's position and the reflective properties of the aircraft
  • Sensors can also be installed to the side of the taxiway guideline
  • Up to three lead-in lines at individual aircraft stands can be operated, including curved lead-in lines
  • Remote access for maintenance
  • Interface to CMS and A-SMGCS already realized
  • Future requirements of the airport are accomplishable, e.g. wing distance clearance detection
