Airfield lighting solutions specialist ADB has provided the Takeoff Hold Lights (THL) for the new Runway Status Lights system at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. ADB's new AD-Lights -inset LED lights designed for runways - warn pilots if taking off is safe or not. Combining low maintenance, high intensity and low power consumption, these AD-Lights perfectly provide the needed efficiency for the RWSL solution.
Runway incursions are amongst the greatest risks in airport operations today. Airplanes or vehicles entering the runway on unsafe moments have been subject to many accidents or near-accidents. To prevent this, FAA has developed the Runway Status Lights (RWSL) concept, warning pilots and drivers if entering the runway is unsafe at the moment. RWSL systems enhance airport safety enormously and are therefore considered more and more essential at large airfields.
Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport has equipped its two main airstrips with a new RWSL solution. For the Takeoff HoldLights (THL) on the runway, the airport chose ADB's brand-new inset AD-Lights solution. This will be the world-first installation of the high-intensity LED lighting solution, and will signal the pilots if the runway is safe for takeoff. The quality of ADB's AD-Lights ensures a perfect visibility at all times, even in challenging visibility conditions.
ADB is a pioneer of LED technology and introduced its first LED solutions to the market in 2002. Since then, no less than 350,000 units have been installed at airfields worldwide. Because of the existing restrictions of LED technology, these lights were however restricted to the taxiways. With the new ADLights range, ADB brings the advantages of LED, including low maintenance, long lifetime and minimal power consumption, to the runways for the first time.
