Antigo Breakers - Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation

Antigo Breakers’ concrete pavement rehabilitation techniques of cracking and seating, rubblising, and breaking for removal use a range of guillotine and multi-head Badger Breakers®. Their unique designs have revolutionized the manner in which existing concrete pavements can be recycled.

Antigo’s in-situ recycling techniques are suitable for runways, taxiways, highways, urban streets, and interior and exterior building slab re-construction projects. They are less disruptive and therefore more cost effective than conventional methods of construction.

Antigo’s world wide operations offer airport infrastructure engineers environmentally acceptable processes. An existing concrete pavement can be effectively modified to create a structural layer in order to accept an asphalt overlay.

CRACKING AND SEATING OF RUNWAYS AND PAVEMENTS

Antigo utilizes two innovative techniques of in-situ recycling maintenance methods. Cracking and seating is used to modify the existing characteristics of a rigid pavement into a more flexible structure, retaining as much of the pavement stiffness and strength as possible to minimise the thickness of the asphalt overlay.

Inducing fine vertical hairline cracks into the existing concrete pavement to form small ‘platelets’ changes the way the pavement behaves. This allows significantly less asphalt to be used for the same design life. This process also substantially delays the effect of reflective cracking.

RUBBLISING CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

Rubblising is a more aggressive process than cracking and seating and is suitable for pavements that show extreme signs of deterioration. It eliminates reflective cracking, and is suitable for plain and reinforced concrete pavements.

MULTI-HEAD BADGER BREAKER

In response to the industry’s need for a more radical method of reconstruction that would provide a cost effective and less disruptive method of recycling such pavements, Badger designed and manufactured the unique multi-head breaker the MHB Badger Breaker.

The multi-head breaker induces random cracking into the pavement, producing differential sizing throughout the thickness of the slab.

The fractured interlocking structure produced by rubblising retains a significant structural value that can be incorporated into the design of the reconstruction pavement, again reducing the thickness of the overlay for the same life expectancy.

After rubblising the surface is rolled with a grid roller for seating and to further reduce the size of the surface. This leaves a granular material ready to accept the asphalt overlay.

Both cracking and seating and rubblising reduce construction traffic, distribution and risk. This therefore makes them both cost-effective and environmentally favourable.

DEMOLITION MACHINES FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

The 8600 guillotine and the MHB Badger Breaker are extremely effective demolition machines with considerable capacity for pre-sizing concrete pavements for removal. They are suitable for both plain and reinforced concrete pavements and building slabs.

The multi-head breaker is considerably effective on reinforced pavements up to 300mm thick. The unique action of the breaker de-bonds the steel reinforcement so that the rebar can be effectively separated with the minimum of concrete attached.

For thicker reinforced pavements the MHB can still be utilised by pre-breaking the slab with an 8600 guillotine breaker. A typical 300mm thick concrete slab can be reduced to a consistent sizing at a rate in excess of 3,000m² per shift.

EXPERIENCE OF MAINTAINING OVER 150 MILLION M² OF PAVEMENT

Antigo has completed thousands of projects involving over 150 million m² of pavement cracking and seating, rubblising, and breaking for removal.

These projects have been located in the USA, Canada, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Afghanistan and China, and vary from small urban schemes to major highway contracts and fast track runway reconstructions.

Antigo always completes the job as specified, on time, and within budget.
