ADDCON - De-Icing and Anti-Icing Products for Runways

Airport de-icers

Potassium formate-based de-icer

First introduced to the world market in 1995, Aviform was for a long time the only potassium formate-based de-icer available. The Aviform products are developed, manufactured and sold by ADDCON Nordic.

De-icer for safe take-off and landing

Aviform L50 is designed to obtain maximum friction and thereby safe take-off and landing. Aviform L50 can be used with all standard airport-spraying equipment and is ideal as a precautionary agent in the face of severe weather conditions. The product will prevent a bond between the surface and the ice, making it easier to remove the ice by mechanical means.

Biodegradability and eco-toxicological tests have been performed and Aviform L50 conforms with SAE AMS 1435A. Aviform L50 has lower oxygen demand than glycol and acetate-based runway de-icers, thus diminishing the negative impacts of runway winter de-icing on the environment without jeopardising traffic safety.

Aviform L50 is not based on nitrogen salts and is not toxic to humans, animals or aquatic organisms. It is fully biodegradable in aqueous systems without causing oxygen depletion and is listed as a non-hazardous component.

De-icer for thick ice layers

Aviform S-Solid is the brand name for granulated sodium formate and is the ideal de-icing agent during severe winter conditions on thick ice layers up to 8mm thick. Aviform S-Solid breaks the bond holding ice and snow to the surface of runways and taxiways, facilitating mechanical ice and snow removal to maintain adequate friction between aircraft tyres and the runway. It can be used with all standard spreading equipment.

This de-icer for thick ice layers fulfils all environmental and technical requirements. It is not toxic to humans, animals or aquatic organisms and is fully biodegradable in aqueous systems.

Formate-based de-icers require less oxygen and have a shorter breakdown time than most de-icing agents. The oxygen depletion of soil, surface/groundwater and sewage treatment plants is strongly reduced, and thus the products' impact on the environment is minimal compared to urea and other well-known de-icing products.

Biodegradability and eco-toxicological tests have been performed on Aviform S-Solid, as part of the process of it attaining AMS 1431B certification.

Environmentally-friendly de-icers

Several of the de-icing and anti-icing products available today are non-toxic, but they can cause serious damage to the environment in and around the airport.

The environmental impact is mainly linked to the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and the time it takes for the chemical to break down. While the oxygen demand for de-icers based on potassium formate and sodium formate, like Aviform L50 or Aviform S-Solid, is modest, the oxygen demand in biodegradation of competing urea or acetate products is much higher.

'Green chemistry' is the main pillar of ADDCON's business. At our production sites in Bitterfeld, Germany and in Porsgrunn, Norway we add value to organic acids and the respective salts that we incorporate in our products. Our products are used in the feed and food industry, as well as in de-icing of airports and in the oil drilling industry.

All products are bio-degradable and have little impact on the environment.
