COMPLEX AIR CARGO HANDLING SYSTEMS

The planning of a complex handling system is more than just the addition of separate items. In order to ensure that pallets and containers are conveyed at the right time to the right place, complete systems must be designed.

Some of the world's largest automated terminals are from SHS, including Lufthansa Cargo Center in Frankfurt, KLM-Cargo, Terminal 2 in Amsterdam and Japan Airlines Cargo Terminal, JFK Airport in New York.

SHS cargo handling systems are modular, self-sustained units designed for specific functions. The modular building block systems are made from single systems, which are composed of various functional elements, that provide self-sustained integrated control. These systems are discussed below.

ROLLER CONVEYOR SYSTEMS

SHS modular cargo handling systems are tailored to meet your individual needs and requirements, and can be expanded to fulfil all your future demands.

The basic element of this modular system is the roller deck for 10ft and 20ft aircraft pallets and containers. This deck is available in two different versions: as an active element within a conveyor section with its own drive, and as a passive element within a storage or conveyor section.

Other components include turntables, workstations, truck docks, transfer vehicles, automated storage and retrieval machines and nose docks.

PASS-OVER CONVEYOR SYSTEMS FOR SMALL AIR CARGO TERMINALS

Specially designed for use in smaller air cargo terminals, the modular Pass-Over System comprises wheels decks, right-angle decks, workstations and truck docks. The system conveys air cargo pallets and containers safely and gently.

The compact system does not waste space with conveyors, which are installed flush with the warehouse floor. The conveyor wheels protrude a mere 12mm above the floor level, allowing mobile transport equipment with a wheel load of up to 5t to pass over the deck.

ROLL BOX SYSTEMS FOR ECONOMICAL BULK CARGO HANDLING

The Roll Box System is designed for the automatic storage and handling of small- to medium-sized shipments (bulk cargo), with a maximum total weight of 600kg, in a screen-type roll box.

Used around the built-up and break-down areas, the roll box can be moved on its own wheels, while within the system it is conveyed on specially designed roller conveyors. The roll box can also be transported by a forklift truck and stacked.

As with the other SHS systems, the Roll Box System is designed in modular blocks, which include:

• Conveyor decks
• Right-angle decks
• Vertical conveyors
• In-feed / out-feed stations
• Automated storage and retrieval systems

HIGH-SPEED CARGO HANDLING SYSTEMS

The Carrier System for automatic or manual operation uses slave pallets or carriers to overcome problems of the different sizes of unit load devices in operation.

A unit load from the aircraft arriving into the system automatically connects with a slave pallet (measuring 3.3m x 2.6m), which is capable of accommodating a 10ft unit load that weighs up to 6.8t. For a 20ft unit load, two carriers can be coupled together for conveyance through the system.
