Amarillo International Airport passengers will soon benefit from a state-of-the-art baggage handling system (BHS) to be manufactured and installed by Glidepath, an international supplier of turnkey BHS projects based in Dallas Fort Worth. As a key component of the airport's $52m terminal renovation program, the new in-line baggage system will include multiple units of the latest explosive detection system equipment supplied by the Transportation Security Administration.
The accelerated construction schedule calls for on-site work to commence in January in order to meet the scheduled opening of the new terminal building in May 2011. BNP Associates conducted the system design and Glidepath was selected by the city of Amarillo to finalise the engineering and install the baggage system. Glidepath will work closely with the general contractor, Western Builders, as well as the design firm RS&H as they provide on-site coordination with other elements of the terminal construction project.
"We need a firm that can mobilise quickly and provide a high-quality baggage system for our growing passenger needs. Glidepath convinced us that they understood our requirements and are capable of meeting the fast-track construction schedule," says Pat Rhodes, the city's deputy director of Aviation.
Glidepath is quite familiar with the current baggage system as they installed various components of the system nearly twenty years ago and continue to provide parts and supplies. Most recently, Amarillo airport management called Glidepath to help restore the system in January when flooding caused the system to shut down.
"We received the call, mobilised our team and were on site from our Dallas base within three hours" says David Mead, Glidepath's vice president. "Getting the system restored was vital to the airport and we had everything operational within an hour. We were pleased to be of service," he added.
