12 November 2007

UFIS Airport Innovation (UFIS AI) is currently delivering BRAINS®, its high-level control software system, to Barcelona Airport at its new Midfield Terminal. UFIS AI is working in conjunction with Vanderlande Industries and Dragados to deliver a complete baggage handling system to the terminal.

The delivery includes UFIS AI's BRAINS, the complete network infrastructure, design and delivery of the control room, and all computer hardware. The BRAINS package includes modules to handle planning, routing, and sorting. The components have been optimized and configured to meet Barcelona's requirements. External interfaces to the BRAINS® system include: the Flight Information Display System (FIDS), the check-in system, the Resource Management System, the Building Management System, the Access Control Room and the Airport Time Server.

"The input of local expertise, through the partnership with Vanderlande Industries," said Idar Sorjgerd, managing director of UFIS AI, "in combination with the high quality of our software has great benefits for the customer and will ensure that all requirements are met completely and on time."

Vanderlande Industries is delivering MDS (SCADA), the Material Flow Control, Empty Tub Management system, Bag Storage management, and the mechanical equipment, including TUBTRAX , conveyers, baggage check-in facilities, and tilt-tray sorters.

"This is the largest BRAINS project so far," said Anders Sagadin, UFIS Airport Solutions' president and CEO, "and it represents an important international reference for UFIS Airport Innovation as well as for the UFIS Group as a whole. We are very pleased to provide our solutions and services not only in the flight information software systems but in baggage handling software as well."

The Midfield Terminal at Barcelona will have the capacity to handle 25 million passengers per year when it opens in 2008. This will increase the capacity of the airport to 40 million passengers.
