Berlin Airports - Berlin Brandenburg International AirportBerlin Airports maintains the air-traffic infrastructure for Germany's capital region of Berlin Brandenburg, including the airports of Schoenefeld, Tegel and Tempelhof. From 2011, all air traffic will flow through the new airport in the German capital, Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI). RAPID GROWTH AT BERLIN'S AIRPORTSBerlin's airports are recording record growth: in 2006, 18.5 million passengers flew to and from Berlin. Berlin ranks third in Germany in terms of passenger volume, and at around 8% per annum, Berlin's airports are growing much faster than other commercial airports in Germany. What's more, Berlin is the largest low-cost location in continental Europe. KEY FACTS ABOUT BERLIN'S AIRPORTS
BERLIN BRANDENBURG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTIn 2011 the opening of the new BBI airport will take place. As a result, the airports at Tegel and Tempelhof will be closed, and on the existing Schoenefeld airport's site a totally new airport with an initial capacity of 22 to 25 million passengers a year will open its doors. Depending on the passenger development, the airport can be expanded for up to 40 million passengers per annum, and BBI will therefore be Germany's only airport with the capacity for sustained passenger growth. BBI will be a modern airport with short distances where the terminal is located between the two parallel runways. It will also be A380 compatible: runways and taxiways are sized so that even modern jumbo aircraft (new large aircraft) will have no difficulty departing from or landing at BBI airport. RAPID TRAVEL TO CENTRAL BERLIN BBI airport will not be a 'gold-plated glamour airport', but a new-generation airport: a functional architectural structure with clear lines and a strong focus on short transfer-times. Besides the best flight-connections, BBI airport will have its own motorway connection and a train station directly below the terminal. Travel times to central Berlin will be just 20 minutes with the airport shuttle, and around 30 minutes by motorway. EASTERN EUROPEAN FLIGHTSBBI is intended to be an airport at the heart of Europe with a strong focus on European point-to-point traffic and selected long-haul connections. Berlin's airports traditionally have a strong focus toward Eastern Europe, and with the expansion of the EU to the east this tendency has been reinforced. BBI SERVICE CENTRE – AIRPORT CITYAlong with the attractive airport connections BBI will also have a broad non-aviation offering. In the heart of the new airport the development of the service centre 'Airport City' is underway. In addition to restaurants and large shopping areas, passengers and airport visitors will find cafés, bars, restaurants, hotels, offices and conference centres.
