Airports Company South Africa - O. R. Tambo International Airport

O. R. Tambo International Airport is Airports Company South Africa’s (ACSA) flagship airport and the continent’s premiere window to the rest of the world. It is a giant that inspires pride in the continent as it continues to maintain its status as one of the leading international airports in the world.

A LEADING INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The airport has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1952, and is today celebrated as the busiest airport on the continent and the second largest after Dubai International Airport in the Africa / Middle East region.

Since 1993, when ACSA was formed and given a mandate to own and operate the country’s principal airports, the airport complex has been expanded by thousands of additional square metres. With R3.5 billion set aside for infrastructure development leading up to 2010, the already impressive face of O. R. Tambo International Airport will be further enhanced. The airport is undoubtedly a testament to ACSA’s remarkable success.

THE AIR TRANSPORTATION HUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

As the undisputed air transportation hub of Southern Africa, O. R. Tambo International Airport caters for over 18 million passengers transported by some 58 airlines to 110 destinations all over the world every year. It also carries over 305,000t of cargo annually, translating into 205,000 passenger and cargo aircraft movements (landing and departing) every year on the airport’s two runways.

The airport is serviced by two parallel runways, which run north-south. The length of the western runway, 03L/21R, is 4,418m in length and it is used as the main runway whilst the eastern runway 03R/21L is 3,400m long. It is used is a secondary runway mainly for landings.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL FACILITIES

To ensure safety in poor weather conditions, the main runways at ORTIA are equipped with category II instrument landing systems and related visual navigational aids, which are conscientiously maintained.

DUTY-FREE RETAIL MALL

O. R. Tambo International Airport’s strategy has been maximised with the opening of the duty-free retail mall. Retail income is one of three principal sources of revenue and is a key element in the company's strategy to optimise non-aeronautical income streams.

The opening of the new domestic terminal in February 2003 has significantly expanded ACSA's retail facilities. The new terminal offers a huge array of restaurants, shops and services, to meet the needs of passengers as well as other airport users.

QUALITY AIR-TRANSPORT SERVICES FOR ALL TRAVELLERS

Whilst just less than 1,000 people are directly employed by ACSA at the airport, there are more than 20,000 people employed by 200 different companies and government departments. The airport plays a pivotal role in the Gauteng province's economy, particularly within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality where is it is situated.

A significant amount of work is done in partnership with all stakeholders to deliver a seamless, high-quality service to all travellers.
