Abu Dhabi International Airport serves the city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is the second largest airport in the UAE and saw 6.9 million passengers in 2007, up 30% on 2006, with forecast volumes of over nine million in 2008. Located 32km from Abu Dhabi city centre, on a 350,000m² site, there are three highways that lead from the city centre to the airport: Khaleej Al Arabi (Highway 30), Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum Street (Highway 2) and Salam Street (Highway 8), all of which merge into the E10 on approach to the airport. Abu Dhabi's 24-hour-a-day airportThe airport operates 24-hours-a-day, with one CAT II runway that is 4,000m long and 45m wide, with a 13/31 orientation. A second runway is currently being constructed and will be a CAT IIIB facility, 4,100m long and 60m wide. It will be located 2km north and parallel (but offset) to the existing runway, making it a fully independent runway system. This configuration will provide extensive capacity for the coming decades, rising from the current peak utilisation of 16-18 air traffic movements (ATMs) per hour to around 70 ATMs per hour. Base and hub airport to Etihad AirwaysAbu Dhabi International Airport serves as base and hub airport to Etihad Airways, the fast-growing national flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates, owned by the government of Abu Dhabi. New Terminal 3 Work is currently under way on the new Terminal 3, and it is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2008. Once this is completed, the airport will have an approximate capacity of 12 million passengers per annum. New passenger terminal To meet this growing demand, ADAC has begun development work on a major new passenger terminal, to be situated between the two parallel runways and known as the Midfield Terminal. Cargo and catering facilities, utilities and related infrastructure The construction of the Midfield Terminal is a key element of the broader Midfield Complex, which will include cargo and catering facilities, utilities and related infrastructure. In its first year of operation, the capacity of this facility is expected to reach 20 million passengers, gradually increasing to 40 million passengers per annum. Abu Dhabi International Airport is owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi Airports Company.
