Birds are intelligent and resourceful opportunists that have exploited man-made structures since the dawn of civilization. Although they are sometimes considered less of a problem than other pests, the threats posed by birds can be as serious as those from any other type of vermin. Primarily, roosting birds can cause an extensive amount of structural damage due to a build-up of highly acidic excrement. Secondly, birds can pose a number of severe health risks both through numerous diseases present in their excrement and also through parasites and insects brought in with their nesting materials. These factors make birds an unwelcome guest for any building.

When it comes to airports, it becomes doubly important that birds are deterred from roosting in significant numbers: as well as the usual risks presented by bird infestation, the threat that birdstrike poses to planes during taking off and landing is a significant one. Although it is extremely rare for a plane to be seriously damaged by flocks of birds, it is nevertheless estimated that birdstrike costs the global aviation industry $1.2bil each year due to minor damage, aborted take-offs and aircraft down-time.

Bird exclusion mesh

Bird Guard® mesh is an exclusion system developed primarily for the prevention of access of small birds to roof areas. The mesh is manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with a 3mm hole designed to exclude leaves, twigs debris and nesting material. Bird Guard can be attached under tiles and slate, and to specially-contoured brackets for corrugated roofs. Bird Guard has an avalanche effect on debris yet allows rain water to collect in gutters.

Bird-deterrent shock tape

Bird Ban® shock tape is a clear acrylic tape with two embedded wires which give a painful but harmless electric shock to any bird which lands on it. The trauma of this discourages the bird from landing on an area protected by Bird Ban again. Bird Ban can be powered by batteries, mains or solar power, and comes with a manufacturer’s five-year warranty against UV degradation.

Reflective bird deterrents

Our Eagle Eye™ reflective bird deterrent works by reflecting light beams to imitate the presence of a predator bird. This causes birds to deviate in flight and fly to another destination. It does not affect sitting birds but hinders the bird at the angle which they come in to land at their destination. Once chased away from their sitting position the bird will eventually not return to where the Eagle Eye™ is installed.
