Custom Made Solution by Boon Edam for Every Industry

With hundreds of installations in airports world wide, Boon Edam proves to meet the extreme demands of the airport industry in respect to both functionality and reliability without making any concessions to "the looks". Herewith a summary of another solution Boon Edam developed together with this specific industry.

Based on the excellent cooperation over the past years between Frankfurt Airport and the Boon Edam offices in Germany (with 12 no. 2- wing high capacity revolving doors and 2 no. 4-wing security revolving doors installed in different areas of the airport), Boon Edam was approached to develop a custom made security revolving door for Frankfurt Airport in answer to the following problem definition; "supply a door separating the post-custom controlled area (so-called "Clean Area") from the pre-custom controlled area (freely accessible for anyone and also from the "Clean Area") whereas this door should function unmanned with a high level of reliability and without making any concessions to the security". Quite a task!

This means that large quantities of persons in the so-called "Clean Area" should be allowed to freely leave the "Clean Area" whereas the persons in the pre-custom controlled area should not have any possibility to pass themselves or any kind of material/substance into the so-called "Clean Area":

- people piggy backing through or on the doorset
- guns, explosives etc. attached to the doorset
- guns, explosives etc. thrown through the door.

Having the need to process large quantities of persons, Boon Edam decided to use the 3600mm diameter, 2-wing Duotour as the bases to customise. A proven concept since this door type, in a more common configuration, is already used in other areas of the Frankfurt Airport where it proved its reliability.

In close consultation with Frankfurt Airport, the different steps of product development were initiated and after three months, which included a test period in our factory in Holland, the customised revolving door was installed at Frankfurt Airport in 10 days. A team of specialists spread throughout the Boon Edam Group used different new technologies coming from other industries like e.g. the elevator industry to meet the specific requirements for this product.

Different intelligent sensor technologies on doorset, curved walls, soffit and floor in combination with multiple adjustments in the construction of static and dynamic parts of the door, resulted in a revolving door meeting all requirements.

A completely new software program was made to establish supple balance between the diversified amount of security elements in the door together with an easy and an orderly control over the function of the door.

The first door is now already seven months in operation at Frankfurt Airport to full
satisfaction of all parties involved where more units are already being planned for other areas at Frankfurt Airport.
